Therapeutic ultrasound treatment

Therapeutic Ultrasound

Therapeutic ultrasound is a non-invasive treatment that uses high-frequency sound waves. Unlike diagnostic ultrasound, which creates images, therapeutic ultrasound is applied to a specific area as part of treatment.

At Prahran Foot Clinic, our podiatrists use therapeutic ultrasound as one component of treatment for selected foot and ankle soft-tissue conditions. We first assess the cause of your symptoms and determine whether it has an appropriate role in your care.

What does therapeutic ultrasound involve?

Your podiatrist applies a small amount of gel to the treatment area and gently moves a handheld applicator over the skin. Most people feel little or no sensation, although mild warmth can sometimes be noticed. Let your podiatrist know if you experience any discomfort.

When is therapeutic ultrasound used?

Depending on your diagnosis, therapeutic ultrasound can be included in the management of conditions affecting tendons, ligaments, fascia and other soft tissues of the foot and ankle.

It can also form part of treatment for plantar heel pain and persistent soft-tissue symptoms. Research findings differ between conditions, so your podiatrist will assess whether it is appropriate for your particular diagnosis.

Part of a broader treatment plan

Therapeutic ultrasound is generally used as one part of a broader treatment plan. Depending on your condition, this can also include:

Your podiatrist will explain the purpose of each recommendation and review how you are responding. If another approach is better suited to your condition, we will explain why.

Why choose Prahran Foot Clinic?

Clear diagnosis and clinical reasoning come first. Our podiatrists take the time to listen, assess your condition and explain your treatment options in straightforward language.

We recommend therapeutic ultrasound when it has a clear purpose within your treatment plan. We will explain why it has been selected, what the treatment involves and how your progress will be reviewed.

Our Prahran clinic welcomes patients from South Yarra, Windsor, Toorak, Armadale, Malvern, St Kilda and across Melbourne.

Frequently asked questions

Is therapeutic ultrasound the same as diagnostic ultrasound?

No. Diagnostic ultrasound produces images of structures inside the body. Therapeutic ultrasound does not produce an image; it delivers sound-wave energy to a specific treatment area.

Is therapeutic ultrasound uncomfortable?

Most people feel little or no sensation during treatment, although experiences vary. Please tell your podiatrist if anything feels uncomfortable.

How many appointments will I need?

There is no standard number for every patient. The recommended frequency depends on your diagnosis, treatment plan and response. Your podiatrist will regularly review your progress.

Is therapeutic ultrasound used on its own?

It is generally used as one component of a broader treatment plan rather than as a stand-alone treatment.
