What is a CAM walker?
A CAM (controlled ankle motion) walker is a removable medical walking boot designed to limit movement at the foot and ankle. It is also commonly called a moon boot.
The rigid shell and cushioned liner provide support while the rocker-style sole assists protected walking when weight bearing is appropriate. The correct boot, fit and wearing plan depend on your diagnosis and stage of recovery.
When may a CAM walker be recommended?
After assessment, a CAM walker may form part of the treatment plan for selected foot, ankle and lower-leg injuries.
Common uses
- Stable foot or ankle fractures and some stress fractures
- Moderate to severe ankle sprains
- Selected tendon and soft-tissue injuries
- Post-operative protection when advised by your surgeon or podiatrist
- Short-term immobilisation when reducing load and movement is clinically appropriate
An assessment comes first
Not every painful foot or ankle should be placed in a CAM walker. Some injuries require imaging, a different brace, crutches, strict non-weight bearing or urgent medical care.

Wearing and caring for your CAM walker
Follow the instructions provided for your particular injury. General advice includes:
- Wear the boot for the prescribed activities and duration.
- Use a long, clean sock and check the skin each day for rubbing, blisters or pressure areas.
- Keep the liner clean and dry, and do not alter the boot yourself.
- Use crutches or another walking aid if recommended.
- Attend reviews so fit, swelling and recovery can be reassessed.
When to seek advice
Contact your podiatrist or treating clinician if the boot feels excessively tight or loose, causes persistent rubbing, or if pain and swelling are worsening rather than settling.
Seek urgent medical assessment for increasing numbness, cold or discoloured toes, marked calf pain or swelling, chest pain or shortness of breath.
Do not drive while wearing a CAM walker unless you have been specifically cleared to do so and can safely control the vehicle.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a referral?
A referral is not usually required for a private podiatry appointment. Bring any imaging, reports or instructions from your doctor or surgeon so your podiatrist can consider them during the assessment.
Can I remove the boot?
This depends on the injury and stage of recovery. Some patients can remove the boot for hygiene, sleep or prescribed exercises, while others require stricter immobilisation. Follow the individual instructions provided by your treating clinician.
Will I need crutches?
Not always. Crutches may be recommended when weight bearing needs to be reduced or when pain, balance or the nature of the injury makes walking in the boot unsafe.
How long will I need to wear it?
Wear time varies with the diagnosis, severity and rate of healing. Your podiatrist will explain the expected timeframe and review your progress rather than relying on a fixed period for every patient.
Is the CAM walker included in the consultation fee?
