MRI scan showing bone marrow oedema
At the base of this patient’s heel bone, bone marrow oedema is seen on MRI as a slightly lighter patch.

Bone Marrow Oedema

Caused by an excess of fluid building up within bone marrow, bone marrow oedema (sometimes referred to as ‘bone bruising’ or a bone marrow lesion) is a painful and often debilitating condition known for its typically long healing times. Traditionally, CAM walkers (moon boots) and footwear modification, along with rest, were the primary methods of slowly reducing this build-up of fluid.

More recently, papers published in the Journal of Orthopaedic Surgery and Research have shown that Radial Shockwave Therapy is a clinically effective means of reducing both the symptoms and the amount of bone marrow oedema present1.
