Nail care, corns and callus
Nail care
We trim and shape toenails, reduce thickened nails and smooth rough edges to improve comfort in your shoes. Professional nail care is especially helpful when nails are difficult to cut or reaching your feet is uncomfortable.
We assess and manage thickened nails, fungal nails and nail trauma, with care tailored to the condition of your nails. We explain changes in nail colour, thickness and shape, discuss treatment options and provide advice on ongoing nail care. For a painful nail edge, explore our ingrown toenail treatment.
Corns (heloma durum)
A hard corn, called a heloma durum, is a small area of thickened skin with a firm central core. It develops where pressure is concentrated and can feel like walking on a small stone.
We carefully remove the corn and surrounding hard skin to relieve pressure, then identify footwear or loading factors that contribute to it. Corns do not have roots, but can recur if pressure continues.
Callus (hyperkeratosis)
Callus is a broader area of thickened skin caused by repeated pressure or friction. This skin thickening is known as hyperkeratosis and often develops beneath the forefoot or around the heels.
We reduce excess callus and smooth the skin to improve comfort. Footwear advice, cushioning and an appropriate moisturiser help manage the build-up between visits.
What to expect at your appointment
Assessment and treatment
We discuss your concerns, medical history and current foot-care routine, then examine your skin and nails. Let us know about diabetes, reduced sensation, circulation problems or medicines that affect bleeding.
Your podiatrist explains the findings and recommended care. Suitable skin and nail treatment can usually begin during the appointment.
A plan that suits you
Bring the shoes you wear most often and a current medication list. We will discuss home care and whether follow-up treatment would be helpful.
Some people need occasional care; others benefit from regular appointments. Your review interval will reflect your nail growth, skin changes and foot health.
Looking after your feet between visits
- Wash and dry your feet carefully, including between the toes.
- Use a suitable moisturiser on dry skin, avoiding between the toes.
- Choose shoes with enough room for your toes and check for rubbing.
- Avoid cutting corns or callus yourself. Ask your podiatrist before using medicated corn treatments.
Living with diabetes?

Common questions about foot care
Can I book just for nail cutting?
Yes. You can book for help with nail care, including nails that are thickened or difficult to reach. We also check for skin and nail concerns that may need attention.
Will my corn or callus come back?
It can return if pressure or rubbing continues. Treatment addresses the hard skin, while footwear advice and pressure relief help manage the underlying cause.
Is this the same as a pedicure?
Podiatry foot care includes assessment of your foot health and treatment of skin and nail problems. The focus is comfort, function and appropriate care for your medical needs.
Do I need a referral?
You can book a private podiatry appointment directly. Referral requirements apply to some funded services; see our fees and rebates information or contact the clinic.
